My Journey to Boston This Year

Over the past seven years since I got married, it has always been my dream to drive my wife and son to Boston, from our home in Flushing, New York. It would not just be an ordinary drive in an ordinary car. It would not just be an ordinary vehicle that would get us through the I-95 to I-84 to I-90 safely and comfortably. It would have to be no less than the 2017 Chevrolet Suburban RST Edition.

True to its “Wherever you go, you’re home” tagline, this 9-seater full-size SUV literally transported our entire New York household – yes, including my parents-in-law and brother-and-sister-in-law — with all the comfort and sophistication of our home. The 4G LTE Wi-Fi (capable of connecting up to seven devices) provided us the much-needed connection to the online world during the 270-minute drive. My wife’s Facebook access and my sister-in-law’s VPN connection to her Manhattan office did not miss any bits and bytes of network hiccup at all.

My 6–year-old son also had his fair share of “home-in-a-Chevy-Suburban” moments when he watched – for the nth time — Star Wars’ “Return of the Jedi” and “The Force Awakens” from the Rear-Seat Entertainment System with Blu-Ray. He even used the built-in Digital Headphones, which made him feel like he was Luke Skywalker flying the X-Wing.

My brother-in-law and I truly were awestruck with the 355 horsepower, 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine that clocked-in at 23 MPG during our trip. Wouldn’t it be a dream to drive such a beast with such best-in-class fuel economy? The lightweight Premium Smooth Ride Suspension package definitely made us feel like Han Solo and Chewbacca (most likely resembling me) alternating in driving this Millennium Falcon-like SUV in terms of smoothness and maneuverability. The 8-inch Driver Information Center with Head-Up Display made us feel we could almost bring our beloved passengers to Hyperspace in Lightspeed.

And by the way, my parents-in-law also raved about the Business Class-like leg room they had even at the third row. With such a relaxing luxury, who could blame them if they occasionally dozed off during our trip? They did not even feel the expected thumps and bumps from our bags and luggage behind the third row. How come? That 39.3 cu ft of storage space was so big to accommodate all our stuff for this weekend road trip.

As we reached the end of the Interstate en route to Boston, we felt a close encounter with the Force. Believe it or not. Traffic was building up and our speed was below 50 mph. I was the designated driver then while my brother-in-law was on the front passenger seat, getting a nice, cool nap. I also noticed that my wife, son, sister-in-law, and parents-in-law were likewise in dreamland. And then suddenly…. I felt the tempting urge of closing my eyes as well. Oh my dear…. And I really did. After a few seconds of micro-sleep, I really thought we would really bump into the other SUV in front of us.

But, lo and behold, I suddenly felt this SUV’s Forward Automatic Braking System coming into real-life action… slowly, carefully and slowly… until we came to a full stop within about a foot from the other vehicle’s rear bumper. Whew! That was really close!
